Hair colour and colour psychology are top topics of interest to me, so when I came across this blonde hair psychology ‘research’ I couldn’t resist this.
I had to laugh when I read recently that blondes are more aggressive than brunettes or redheads. The findings of a study on students in California found that “Fair-haired women, whether natural or out of a bottle, display a warlike streak when fighting battles to get their own way“.
Do those with blond hair colour live in a bubble?
As I have been a bottle blonde for a few years now, I was naturally rather intrigued by this potentially worrying suggestion and, for one moment of complete stupidity, I even wondered if it was true! What a dipstick I am, and the only reasonable way to deal with my appalling lapse of judgement is to laugh out loud!
The lead researcher suspected that blondes existed in a ‘bubble’, where they had been treated better than other people for so long they did not realise that men, in particular, were more deferential towards them than other women. He said, “They may not even realise they are treated like a princess“. The researchers believe this sense of entitlement is what makes blondes more willing to ‘go to war’ over an issue.
I doubt if many men treated Margaret Thatcher like a princess when she was on her way to becoming Britain’s first woman Prime Minister, even though she was a strawberry blonde. And even if they did, I doubt very much if that ‘sense of entitlement’ had anything whatsoever to do with her being more than willing to go to real war when she deemed it necessary!
Apparently, the research also discovered that even women who dyed their hair blonde quickly took on the attributes of those who were naturally blonde.
What a load of bunkum!
I went blonde overnight in January 2009 and a few years further on I’m still as bad at confrontation as I ever was. Give me the choice of fighting a battle head on and running away and I will always be three thousand yards away before you can mutter, “Gin and tonic”. This study was based on a mere 156 students who were concentrated in one very small area of just one country out of the entire world. So before you go trying to live up to the results of this ‘scientific’ research, consider first:
- how old you are
- the culture and country in which you live
- what you have to do to put bread on the table
- how you normally fight your battles
- and most importantly, if you ever actually truly GET your own way!
My advice? Whatever your hair, skin or eye colour, be who you really, truly are and you’ll be just fine!
Here’s a response from Karen, one of my newsletter readers…
“Jesus wept, I’ve heard it all now! Seems us fair haired women either get called bimbos due to the colour of our barnet, especially those of us with a big chest, or that blondes have more fun (in what lifetime?) or the latest one, we are warlike! What a load of ol’ tosh! OK, I’ll admit to being a bit fiery and feisty, but it ain’t anything to do with being blonde (I’m a natural dark blonde with a few (LOADS) of “natural” white highlights).
Rather I was brought up in a predominantly male household, having three older brothers and my dad. My mum and I were the only females and she too had four brothers. So that’s my reason for my feisty nature, the male influence! It’s nothing to do with being treated like a princess, not in this lifetime anyway! Having said that though, I dislike confrontation and avoid it if I can. So, OK, I’m a big busted blonde, and bimbo I’m certainly not. I don’t have more fun than any brunette or redhead I know, and if anyone calls me warlike, I’ll have to get them with my weapons of mass destruction! Lol! Best wishes, Karen Fenton“
