It’s uncanny how many consultants have asked me about one of my favourite subjects, colour personality and colour psychology. Grisburga and I got totally carried away and ended up talking madly for nearly 3 hours so I thought you might be interested in some of the fascinating stuff we got on to.
Colour Psychology
Personally, I could not possibly help a colour or style client without understanding who on earth she is first. That’s where I use my colour psychology quiz which introduces the 4 colour personality types – Yellow, Blue, Green and Red – for living, breathing human beings. Grisburga asked if we could also apply these types to distinct groups of people, for countries, and for businesses. The answer is yes to all three. So here are some examples of business types.
Business Colour Personality Types
Yellow
- Having fun or youth is likely to be important to this type of business
- for instance, a party planner, childrenswear retailer, or a company like Pixar where it seems that all the employees are kids who never managed to grow up – and long may it remain so, in my opinion!
Blue
- Traditional values will be important to this type of business
- for instance, a company that organises cultural events, or produces high-quality, classical designs like Wedgwood, the English pottery makers
Green
- This type of business is motivated by a desire for some kind of change
- for instance, most charities, companies offering activity holidays or businesses offering help and advice for enterprise, such as The Chamber of Commerce
Red
- This type of business often deals with numbers and facts, or where efficiency and co-ordination is important. They are often large scale comanies
- for instance, most banks and financial institutions, air travel and transportation companies, like British Airways
BEWARE of jumping to unsubstantiated conclusions
Colour personality typing has nothing whatsoever to do with the colours that these companies might choose for their logo or branding:
- Colour analysis deals with the physical
- Colour psychology is the key to the identity of the person, group, country, or business
BE AWARE that determining a business’ colour personality type might then lead to a better informed choice of colours for their physical logo, branding, etc. Absolutely mind-blowing stuff. I love it!
