In the movie ‘White Christmas’, during the ‘The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing’ sequence, Danny Kaye is wearing grey and Vera-Ellen is wearing pink.
I’ve always wondered why on earth the fabulously brilliant film costume designer, Edith Head, dressed a Bright Romantic Dramatic in a soft, girly pink. The styling is brilliant, but the colour is far too pale.
And the very thought of an Autumn in such a light, muted grey makes me come over all unnecessary. The poor man looks positively wan!
Apparently, the reason is that pink and grey was the hot colour combination in 1954.
Later on, in the movie, Vera-Ellen looks stunning in Bright colours – black, white, and red (lipstick, nails, belt, and shoes) – and Danny Kaye no longer looks like he needs a large brandy, wearing Warm colours – tan, moleskin, and creamy beige.
And there you have it – another darned good example why our clients need us… to steer them away from colours that drain and towards those that make them look and feel fabulous, regardless of what might be ‘in fashion’.
