1) No more commuting
Cut your travel costs – whether that’s bus or rail fare, or the cost of petrol, tyres, insurance, etc. if you go to work by car. Perfick!
If you currently drive to work (and you have my deepest sympathy), cut down on the stress caused by the manic behaviour of other drivers. I seriously cannot believe anyone puts themself through this every day! I would never, ever go back to this way of living
Invest all those wasted hours spent sitting in traffic back into your business. Just think what you could achieve with an extra 5, 10, or 15 hours every week
2) No boss
Even if you do get on with your boss…
A boss dictates what time you have to get up to be at work on time. This then determines what time you eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner (or tea, depending on where you live!).
An employer pays you a set wage which determines what kind of house you live in, what you can afford to buy, if and when you can take any holidays, and whether what you have left after paying your bills provides enough for a weekend at Butlins or two weeks in the sun…
You’ve probably guessed already but I clearly wasn’t put on this planet to work for anyone else. I am utterly unemployable. So working for myself is the only option!
3) Flexible
Work when it suits you, not in some idiotic 9 – 5 cycle that completely messes with your natural biorhythms and wears you out, especially if you’re doing a job you hate!
Work your own hours, when you want. I’m a night owl and often work through the night and sleep during the day. I work when it suits me.
Be there for your kids. Children grow up so quickly. What are you missing out on right now because you just aren’t there? Design your own schedule so you can take them to school, collect them, attend all their events.
4) Financial independence
If you don’t fancy giving up your current employee income, you can do what I did in the early days and start a second career with a home-based business. This gives you so many options…
Decide what you want to earn and control your income.
Entrepreneurs can write off expenses like travel, phone bills, car costs, and you could qualify for government incentives. Ask your bookkeeper/accountant to clarify exactly what you are eligible for.
5) Job security
Have you ever been fired or laid off? Have you spent sleepless nights wondering if you will be?
When you work for yourself, you are your own boss and you’ll never have to worry about the possibility of being ‘let go’. It’s a fab feeling!
6) Learn new skills
Running your own business allows you to branch out into new areas. Refining your skills and learning new ones allows you to keep up to date.
When you work with teachers and mentors, you can’t fail to develop both professionally and personally.
Sometimes I can’t believe my luck – I actually get paid to learn new stuff all the time. Sheer bliss!
7) Increase your personal satisfaction and happiness levels
- If new challenges rock your boat…
- If different perspectives and working with a variety of people make your heart sing…
- If forging real, personal connections with your clients makes you feel all gooey inside…
… then you should seriously be running your own business.
You will not only create personal satisfaction and incredible happiness levels for yourself, but for your adorable clients too. Stonkin!
8) Leave a legacy
Pass the business, or the proceeds, down to your children and grandchildren.
Set and leave a positive example as an entrepreneur for your family and friends.
A lasting legacy develops from a life of pursuing your passion and purpose. I’ve found mine. What’s yours?
9) Reinvent yourself
If I had stayed in my original career, I would have become a bank manager… and then what? God’s teeth! It really doesn’t bear thinking about!
When I first started working from home, I sold make-up, health products, perfumes, clothes, and more… I also ran ‘probably the best rally website in the world’ for 5 years before changing tack again to set up my personal business helping people to look and feel fabulous with the help of colour and style.
The next stage of my own journey was to create Improvability, doing what I love the most – designing and teaching so that I can help YOU create your own home-based image business, doing what you love the most!
10) Make money doing something you love
What could be better than seeing people change before your very eyes, knowing that you have helped someone else look and feel more confident, AND getting paid for it?
When you do what you love, what you were put on the planet for, you have an opportunity to create something new, built around your personality and your passion.
This is how I live my life.
I love it.
I love the freedom that running my own home-based business brings.
How about you?
