The ‘What to wear to a special event’ adventure so far:
When I started this article, it was just a few paragraphs long but, as is my wont, I added a bit here and changed a bob there, and ended up with War and Peace. So I decided to split it into 5 parts. And I’ve still not finished because I woke up this morning with even more. So there’s part 6 a bit further down this page.

Part 6: How many outfits?
You have way more outfit combinations in your wardrobe than you can possibly imagine. For instance, when I was creating the notes for my Colour Analysis course, I came up with a list of 47 outfits using only 3 colours with
- 3 jackets
- 4 tops
- 4 bottoms
When I physically demonstrated this on the first live Personal Style event, I discovered that I had made a rather large boo-boo. The rather enthusiastic group of ladies stayed behind after the first day’s training and, using the actual jackets, tops and bottoms I’d brought along, they came up with more.
- 76 different outfits
- from the exact same 11 individual items
I just sat and watched them in amazement. Then we all had to go to the bar for an extremely large gin and tonic to try and compensate for all the extra brain work.
A couple of years later, when I was coaching a group of Personal Shopping & Wardrobe trainees, I told them the story above. They were pretty fired up and took this as a challenge to improve on 76 outfits. They got together after the event and came up with 144 permutations from the same 11 items!
No, I’m not asking for any improvements on 144 at all. I think we’ve got more than enough. After all, the purpose of the exercise isn’t to frighten anyone with numbers but to demonstrate how understanding your colours, style, shape and personality gives you.
The moral of this story – You only need a small number of individual pieces in your wardrobe that complement your colouring, body shape and style personality to have something fabulous to wear for every single occasion.
